Epstein Files Highlight Urgent Need for Trauma-Informed Justice

As DOJ releases the Epstein files, RAINN outlines its support response: the National Sexual Assault Hotline, justice reform, and removing barriers to accountability.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 15, 2025) – As the Department of Justice begins to release the Epstein files in advance of the December 19th deadline, RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, remains committed to supporting survivors through this pivotal, yet complex, moment.

This release represents a victory for the survivors who have courageously demanded transparency and the truth for decades. It is a testament to their strength that, even when the justice system failed them, they persisted in their pursuit of answers.

RAINN is focusing on three essential areas to support survivors during this time:

1. Providing 24/7 Services through the National Sexual Assault Hotline

The intense media coverage surrounding the release can be painful and challenging for all survivors, not only those directly harmed by Epstein. We expect people to reach out for help.

We have mobilized our staff and volunteers to ensure that every survivor who reaches out to the National Sexual Assault Hotline receives immediate, free, confidential, and compassionate support.

RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline offers free, confidential, 24/7 support in English and en Español.

We also call on Congress to pass the Crime Victims Stabilization Fund Act to ensure organizations nationwide have the resources to support every survivor who seeks help.

2. Fighting for a More Effective Justice System

The files’ contents may detail the investigative and prosecutorial missteps that prioritized perpetrators over victims.

We will continue to advocate for legislation that leads to justice for more victims of sexual violence, including requiring law enforcement to receive comprehensive training.

The failures in the Epstein case underscore the urgent need to strengthen victims’ rights, ensuring survivors are consulted, informed, and respected at every stage of the legal process.

Investigations must be based on facts, prioritize the public’s need for justice, and pay attention to the well-being of survivors.

3. Removing Barriers to Justice

While releasing the files offers some form of healing, it does not provide recourse for many of the survivors who were failed.

We urge Congress and state legislators to eliminate the statutes of limitations that block survivors, particularly those of child sexual abuse, from seeking justice.
