RAINN Statement on Use of xAI’s Grok To Produce Child Sexual Abuse Material

RAINN responds to reports that xAI’s Grok is producing nonconsensual sexual images, calling the abuse potentially criminal under existing law.

Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, January 7) – xAI’s Grok is being used to produce non-consensual sexually explicit images of people, primarily women and children. This is now abundantly clear. What is equally clear is that this is the result of xAI’s repeated failures to implement basic safeguards against the creation of AI-generated non-consensual images, particularly of children.

The creation and dissemination of these images is sexual violence—and in the case of any child sexual abuse material (CSAM) created by Grok, it is criminal. These images cause real, lasting harm to those depicted and fuel further online sexual exploitation. Technology companies cannot treat this harm as collateral damage of innovation or a product malfunction.

“I talk with survivors of tech-enabled sexual abuse every day, and what every one of them will tell you is that it feels like it will never end,” said  RAINN Vice President of Public Policy Stefan Turkheimer. “Every notification ding on your phone and message asking ‘Is this you?’ perpetuates the abuse.”

As AI and technology expand, we have a responsibility to ensure it doesn’t come at the cost of the dignity and safety of its users. “Technology companies cannot treat people’s lives as collateral damage,” Turkheimer said. “The Take It Down Act was passed nine months ago. The damage Grok does to young women and girls is criminal, and it must end. And if we have to hold their feet to the fire on behalf of survivors, RANN will do so.”

If you are covering this story, AI, or tech-enabled sexual abuse, please note that RAINN’s Vice President of Public Policy Stefan Turkheimer and Senior Legislative Policy Counsel Sandi Johnson are available for comment and interview on this topic.
