Honoring Our Progress, Strengthening the Future

Safe Helpline December Newsletter Article

As we move into the final months of the year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made together as a community. This year has been one of resilience, collaboration, and determination to create safer spaces for every member of the military community impacted by sexual assault. Behind the scenes, Safe Helpline staff, along with Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARCs), Victim Advocates (VAs), and other service providers, have worked tirelessly to ensure survivors are supported every step of the way. Their dedication, ranging from late-night calls to resource navigation to simply being a trusted voice, continues to make a lasting impact.

Progress in Reporting

Progress is evident at every level. According to the FY 2024 SAPRO report, more survivors are choosing to report sexual assault, which is a powerful indication that individuals are feeling less isolated and more empowered to seek support. This shift is not only a reflection of survivors’ courage, but also of the countless advocates and professionals creating environments where reaching out feels possible.

Expanded Support Solutions

Looking ahead, Safe Helpline is expanding our Local Safe HelpRoom (LSHR) network. These virtual peer-to-peer spaces promote connection and community among survivors of sexual assault while ensuring anonymity, keeping confidentiality, and reinforcing the resilience for which service members are recognized. To make our supportive environment widely available, we need moderators who are ready to step up, receive training, and provide a supportive environment for those in need. Your involvement can directly change lives. By becoming a LSHR Moderator, you can help survivors on your base feel seen, heard, and supported in ways that can strengthen their path to healing.

We’re proud to invite D-SAACP-certified SARCs and VAs across all DoD Services and NACP-certified SARCs and VAs in the U.S. Coast Guard to join us by becoming Local Safe HelpRoom Moderators. Your involvement can directly change lives. By becoming a LSHR Moderator, you can help survivors on your base feel seen, heard, and supported in ways that can strengthen their path to healing.

As we close out the year, we want to thank you—the advocates, staff, moderators, and  members of the military community working to support survivors. Your dedication ensures that no one has to walk this journey alone.
